Lesson 5: Lean on Friendships
Contestants tend to fair much better if they develop and care for friendships they make on the show.
This seems to help them not only during the journey, but afterwards when they are making sense of everything that happened.
And it seems like no matter what happens during the season, they end up on Women (or Men) Tell All or After the Final Rose with strong bonds formed—even if they had some turbulence during (remember how much fighting happened in Peter’s season, but the women still said at the WTA that they loved each other?).
The point is, difficult times call for support!
In our daily lives, friendships can support our well being even when things are “normal”. Right now, this is even more true.
Get creative about ways to connect while following social distancing practices, and don’t be afraid to share what you’re feeling.
SOME IDEAS: Virtual happy hour, virtual game night (you can set up the board the same, and let each other know each time the board changes—or there are actual online games you can play together), virtual trivia, watching a movie together and texting or video chatting during, cooking the same meal like a “cooking club” and sending pictures and talking about it, ordering dessert delivery to your friends, waving at each other from a distance—so many possibilities!
Action Items: Reach out to a friend to ask how they are doing AND share how you are doing.
Also, pick a few things you’d like to try with friends virtually, and make a plan!
